                 Grand Tour of Spain

 

14-16 days. Architecture, Fine Arts, History, Shopping, Culinary Delights, and Cultural Activity.                                                        

 

Sample Itinerary: Day 1. We travel to Spain.

 

Day 2. Madrid. Guided walking tour of the Old Quarter, the 17th-century Plaza Mayor & Plaza de Espana. Then visit the Renaissance-style Royal Palace.

 

Day 3. Madrid. Visit the Prado, one of Europe’s finest art collections. Optional visit to Thyssen-Bornemisza Museum, where you can see over 1,000 masterpieces by the likes of Durer, Caravaggio, Van Gogh, Dutch masters, German Expressionists, and lots of Impressionists.  Alternatively, stroll through the picturesque streets and shop.

 

Day 4. Seville. Travel by AVE train to Seville. See the Cathedral (WHS – World’s 3rd largest), the 12th-century Giralda Tower, the Tomb of Columbus.

 

Day 5. Seville. Visit the Alcazar, an Arabic-style palace built in the 1360s. Stroll through the Barrio Santa Cruz, a neighborhood with elegant patios and labyrinthine streets. This evening attend a flamenco performance.

 

Day 6. Granada. Transfer to Granada, the last Moorish stronghold in Spain. Visit the fantastic 13th –century Alhambra (WHS), its fabled gardens, fountains, courtyards & fortress.

 

Day 7. Granada - Barcelona. Travel to fascinating Barcelona, sophisticated cultural hub & rich, historic center.

 

Day 8. Barcelona. Guided city walk: Gothic Quarter, Placa del Rei, Placa Reinal, the Jewish Quarter & the Boqueria Market.

 

Day 9. Barcelona. Explore Gaudi’s distinctive architecture, the unique La Sagrada Church, the Spanish village and Montjuic Hill’s harbor views.

 

Day 10. Barcelona. A full free day. Suggested activities: Visit Forum building, a daring design and the largest open plaza in the city. Montjuic, Vila Olimpica, and Besos, the two-mile stretch of shoreline between the Port Olimpic section and the mouth of the Besos River, where there is a “bathing zone.”  Alternatively, Stroll through this exciting city, sit at a café along the Ramblas, visit fashion stores, trendy markets, and antique stores, or enjoy tapas and many other delicious regional cuisines.

 

Day 11. Barcelona – Bilbao. Travel to Bilbao, a bustling city & the heart of Spain’s Basque region.

 

Day 12. Bilbao. Visit Frank Gehry’s stunning Guggenheim Museum. Enjoy a tapas lunch. Then explore the Cantabrian City of Santander.

 

Day 13. Bilbao – Madrid. Travel to Madrid. The rest of the day is free. Suggested activities:  Try Fast Good, a variation of mad scientist dishes, which serves quick meals prepared using slow-food ingredients, such as fries cooked in top-quality olive oil and premium Spanish beef burgers topped with Gorgonzola.

 

Day 14 – 16. Extension to Paris or London.

Fly home on Day 14 or continue to Paris or London for two days ($490).
