Day 7. London. A day of leisure. For a great morning start treat yourself a traditional English breakfast with bacon, egg, sausage, and tomato at Mayfair’s Shepherd Market or the London Café.  Then, start your “urban adventure”: Suggested activities:

1) Architecture:  see Greater London Authority Headquarters (City Hall), designed by Norman Foster, 2002. Or see 30 St Mary Axe (The Gherkin), designed by Sir Norman Foster.

2) Neighborhoods: Notting Hill and Hampstead are worth checking out.

3) Theatres and museums: The National Theatre, where there is always high-quality music and theater in the lobby for free; British Museum, Spencer House, the Great Court, the Globe Theater, the Old Vic, or see West End theater performance, or go behind the scenes at Sotheby’s.

4) Hop on and go bus sightseeing around the city.

5) Picnic near the Thames: Go to the legendary Market Porter Pub to pick up some suppliers—serrano ham, focaccia, olives, and artisanal cheeses—and head to the river. You might see a Bond-mobile skimming across the surface of the Thames or some high-caliber street musicians. 6) Culinary Delights: If you are a student of many cuisines and master of several, try Kilburn High Road, where many food markets are Caribbean, Mediterranean Middle Eastern, Bangladeshi, Indian, and Pakistani, and where the city’s ethnic blend was memorialized so vividly in Zadie Smith’s White Teeth.

7) Shopping: Notting Hill’s Portobell Road to the west for antiques; Ladbroke Grove, where all the funkier London shops are; Heidi Klein, where women go for the world’s best bikinis; Savile Row and Jermyn Street, where men go for the James Bond looking suits; Spitalfields to the east, where women go for original designs at bargain prices; Shoreditch, for street-wear like limited-edition hip-hop sneakers; Camden Market, for the odd lost Picasso or Van Gogh or the rare T-shirt; Ellis Street, where the shop of designer Lulu Guinness has long been a must-stop for her fanciful, ladylike accessories; Gabriela Ligenza, for the quirky sculptural hats and shawls; Selina Blow, for warm fitted coats in fun vintage fabrics by Brit designer Ann-Louise Roswald; Her House, which offers local artists’ humorous house-wares.

8) Rock’n’roll Pilgrimages: “London is to rock what Hollywood is to filmmaking.” Visit the Astoria, one of the city’s most popular rock venues; Abbey Road Studios, where the Beatles made their landmark albums; the National Portrait Gallery, where you’ll see Vivienne Westwood, who helped design the Sex Pistols’ punk style in the ‘70s; or The Kaiser Chiefs, the night’s attraction in Leeds.
