10-12 days. Architecture, Fine Arts, Shopping, Culinary Delights, and Leisure

 

Sample Itinerary: Day 1. Fly to Italy.

 

Day 2. Rome. Guided Walking Tour: the Spanish Steps, the Trevi Fountain, the Pantheon & the Piazza Navona, the Forum Romanum—once the heart of the Roman Empire, and the Colosseum, where gladiators once battled for their lives.

 

Day 3. Rome – Vatican City. Visit St. Peter’s Basilica, which has the world’s largest dome; the Vatican museums with the Sistine Chapel and Michelangelo’s marvelous ceiling frescoes. Optional visit to Auditorium Parco della Musica, designed by Renzo Piano, 2002, which looks like “Three giant armadillos”.

 

Day 4. Rome – Florence. Travel to Florence, the Renaissance capital with the treasures of Michelangelo, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael and Botticelli. Guided Walking Tour: the Piazza della Signoria, the Palazzo Vecchio, Santa Croce Church, and the Ponte Vecchio.

 

Day 5. Florence. Visit the Accademia Museum, with Michelangelo’s famed sculpture of David; the Duomo, the most striking feature of the Florence skyline. Optional visit to Scuola del Cuoio, where you can learn leather making and end up at fashion houses like Gucci and Fendi.  Alternatively, stroll to local stores and markets and enjoy some local food.

 

Day 6. Florence – Pisa - Venice. Travel to Pisa. See the famous 12th-century Leaning Tower of Pisa. Then travel to Venice, the Floating City.

 

Day 7. Venice. Visit St. Mark’s Square, the Basilica, the Doges’ Palace, former home of the city’s dukes. Optional visit to Teatro La Fenice, which presents Verdi’s La Traviata and other masterworks, or glide down the Grand Canal by gondola, or explore the hidden palazzi of the city.

 

Day 8. Venice – Milan. Travel to Milan. Stroll the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele II, where chic shops and coffee houses attract Milanese and tourists alike.

 

Day 9. Milan. Visit The Gothic Duomo, crowned with hundreds of pinnacles and the Santa Maria delle Grazie, where Leonardo da Vinci’s The Last Supper is. Go shopping at high fashion boutiques or trendy shops.

 

Day 10-12. Extension to Lucerne or Paris. Fly home on Day 10 or continue to Lucerne or Paris for a two-day extension ($490).
